[03/04/2009] The apocalyptic folk of Current 93, the interesting British band led by David Tibet, is to top the Salón Teatro Extension to the Sinsal Festival with a double bill of special concerts designed exclusively for Santiago. Both events, which are to take place on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May at 22:00, will mark Tibet's second visit to Spain, this time as part of the C93 entente, which is an "open and extremely free circle of musicians".
The concerts will be a taster for the Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain edition, which is anticipated as one of the band's least predictable and most powerful albums. Tibet will be joined on stage with James Blackshaw (16th), Andrew Liles (17th), and Baby Dee, Keith Wood and Alex Neilson; all of whom are unique musicians in reinventing the interpretation of styles that range from acoustic to experimental.
A changing line-up
Current 93 is not a conventional music project. David Tibet, John Balance de Coil and Fritz Haaman founded Current 93 in 1982. However, as soon as their first 12" was published, the group became the personal project of David Tibet and Balance and Haaman chose to devote their time to their own bands. The years went by and Current 93 continued to work as an ever-changing number of collaborators with Tibet. The 25 years of the group's career have included the participation on stage or in the recording studio of artistes of the stature of Cosey Fanni Tutti and Chris Carter (from Throbbing Gristle and Carter-Tutti), Michael Cashmore (Nature & Organisation), Joolie Wood, Björk, Steve Ignorant (Crass), Nick Cave, Rose McDowall (Strawberry Switchblade), Tiny Tim, Björk, Shirley Collins, Bill Fay, Andrew W.K. and Rickie Lee Jones.
Today, its more than 20 records underline a career that has influenced dozens of groups and artistes all over the world: firstly as an industrial music band and later as an emblematic folk group. At the same time, Tibet, through his own label Durtro, has rescued many talents from the darkness, including Antony & The Johnsons and Baby Dee.
Guest performers
C93 is to share stage with the musician James Blackshaw on Saturday 16. An active member of the music scenario since 2003, this British musician is considered as one of the renovators of contemporary acoustic guitar. With his 12-string, Blackshaw interprets his own compositions and improvises onstage continuously. He has recorded six studio albums and one live album and his work has been included in many compilation albums.
On Sunday 17, the limelight will fall to the eclectic Andrew Liles, creator of music that can be minimalistic, surrealistic, experimental or hypnotic, but always far removed from any cliché or stereotype. Liles has collaborated with artistes of the stature of Colin Potter, Bass Communion, Nurse With Wound, The Hafler Trio, Karl Blake, Jonathan Coleclough, Tony Wakeford, Danielle Dax, Rose McDowall and Edward Kaspel. Extremely prolific, he has published more than 50 albums as a solo artist or in collaboration with other musicians.

The tickets for the C93 concerts will go on sale at the Salón Teatro box office two hours before each concert begins. The price is €25 at the box office.
